Roundabout Rules UK — Complete Guide

How to approach roundabouts, choose the right lane, signal correctly, and avoid common mistakes. Based on Highway Code rules 184–190.

The Golden Rule

Give way to traffic coming from your right that is already on the roundabout. Wait for a safe gap before entering. (HC Rule 185)

Common Mistakes on Roundabouts

Approaching too fast
Slow down on approach. You need time to assess the roundabout, check for traffic, and find a safe gap.
Wrong lane selection
Read road markings well in advance. If you're in the wrong lane, continue on the roundabout and go around again safely.
Forgetting to signal left when exiting
Always signal left to let other drivers know you're leaving. Check your left mirror before moving across.
Cutting across lanes
Stay in your lane throughout. Don't drift between lanes — other drivers rely on you staying in your lane.
Stopping on the roundabout
Only stop if traffic ahead has stopped. Otherwise, keep moving. Stopping on a roundabout blocks traffic flow.
