Anticipating hazards, stopping distances, driving in adverse conditions, and emergency situations.

Pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, horse riders, older drivers, and disabled persons.

Theory Test FAQs

How many questions are on the theory test?
The DVSA car theory test has 50 multiple-choice questions. You have 57 minutes to complete them. You must answer at least 43 out of 50 correctly to pass (86%).
What score do you need to pass the theory test?
You need to score at least 43 out of 50 to pass the multiple-choice part. You also need to pass the hazard perception part separately, scoring at least 44 out of 75.
How long is the theory test?
The multiple-choice section is 57 minutes. The hazard perception section follows with 14 video clips lasting about 20 minutes. Total test time is around 1 hour 20 minutes.
How much does the theory test cost?
The theory test costs £23 (as of 2024). You can book it online at the DVSA website. You must pass the theory test before you can book your practical driving test.
How long is the theory test certificate valid?
Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years from the date you pass. If you don't pass your practical test within 2 years, you'll need to retake and pass the theory test again.
