Frequently Asked Questions
How do you parallel park step by step in the UK?
Pick a gap about two car lengths long, signal left, and stop parallel to the car in front of the space with your rear bumpers level, about a metre out. Make a full all-round check, reverse until your rear wheels are level with their rear bumper, then steer full left lock. At about 45° to the kerb take the lock off, and once your front clears the parked car steer full right lock to bring the nose in. Straighten up and stop reasonably close to the kerb.
How far from the kerb should you finish?
Aim for about 30cm. The examiner expects you to park reasonably close to the kerb — finishing well over 50cm out can be marked as a fault, while touching the kerb gently is usually a minor and mounting it is a serious fault.
Is parallel parking in the UK driving test?
Yes. The reverse park (road) is one of the four possible manoeuvres, so there's roughly a one-in-four chance you'll be asked to do it. It's assessed on control, observation, and accuracy, completed within about two car lengths.
